This hard-bound book, reprinted from Hydrobiologia, is in Kluwer's Developments in Hydrobiology series (No. 113) and contains 27 papers originally presented at the meeting in Cork, Ireland, in 1996. The papers cover diverse range of topics of interest to those engaged in the study of the family Littorinidae and related groups. The book includes an Epilogue which summarises current knowledge on littorinids and points the way to future work. For each of 277 species: a photograph, a short description and a distribution map. The work is based on approximately 69000 records. Text is mostly German,but the introduction is also in French. English summary. This atlas is very appealing and gives an impressive amount of information on the molluscs of Switzerland. Nevertheless, as the authors point out, large gaps of knowledge remain to be filled. For example, the distribution of slugs is documented far worse than the distribution of snails or mussels, because older researchers often conserved only shells, but not soft bodies.
