Distribution and general ecology of all quarternary and recent land and freshwater mollusc species of Switzerland. Overview of malacological research in Switzerland and some summarizing tables. For each of 277 species: a photograph, a short description and a distribution map. The work is based on approximately 69000 records. Text is mostly German, but the introduction is also in French. English summary. This atlas is very appealing and gives an impressive amount of information on the molluscs of Switzerland. Nevertheless, as the authors point out, large gaps of knowledge remain to be filled. For example, the distribution of slugs is documented far worse than the distribution of snails or mussels, because older researchers often conserved only shells, but not soft bodies. Civilization and the Limpet by Martin Wells. Perseus Books, 1998, 224pp, £15.50. Enthusiastically reviewed by John Shepherd, in Nature, 24-31 December 1998, pp731-2, as an engagingly haphazard collection of essays providing an antidote to the world of targets, objectives, milestones and deliverables. Each essay is based on some aspect of the life of a sea animal, but encompassing observations on life, civilization and the Universe - the link between sexual habits of the slipper limpets and a Roman aqueduct, how limpets get home, and the best way to catch an octopus.
